TY and Fifth Year Students Visit Top of the Rock Farm

Our Transition Year and Fifth Year Agricultural Science students recently travelled to a very wet West Cork for an educational visit to Top of the Rock Farm in Drimoleague. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the rain did little to dampen the enthusiasm and enjoyment of the day.

On arrival, students received a warm welcome from the farm’s owner, David, who delivered an engaging talk on farm diversification. He explained how he and his wife, Elizabeth, successfully transformed their traditional beef suckler farm into a popular Pod Páirc and Walking Centre, highlighting the importance of innovation and sustainability in modern farming.

Students then had the opportunity to explore the farm and meet a wide variety of animals, with the friendly goat Ivy leading the way on their tour. This hands-on experience provided valuable insight into animal care and farm management.

The visit concluded with a truly memorable experience, as David lit an outdoor fire and students enjoyed roasting marshmallows before beginning their journey back to Carrigtwohill.

Overall, it was an informative and enjoyable day that offered students a deeper understanding of diversification within the agricultural sector.
